The only exception seems to be grass which you can plant there. Normal trees seem to work more like the first example you gave. FC: 1221-0777-4703. This means that there can be nothing in a tile adjacent to the place where you want to plant the seed, a 3×3 tile space. Just imagine that all of the squares around the space where you want to plant the tree have to be empty.Left one is the correct way, but you can move them one more tile on the left. You do not need to water them ever. You do need to make sure there is nothing but dirt in the 8 squares around them until they are fully grown.
